Promoting alternate livelihood for the community involved in manual scavenging or agrarian labor and education for their children
State: Karnakata NGO: Human and Institutional Development Forum (Thamate initiative) Summary: Caste identities, socio-economic structures of caste-based tiered hierarchy, and caste-based discrimination are realities of the Indian society even today. Several menial jobs are still performed by people from specific castes, traditionally at the lowest rung of social hierarchy, typically through family inheritance. Thamate works with the community of people involved in manual scavenging professions, predominantly belonging to some of the Scheduled Castes, to organize them, raise awareness about and fight for their rights and legal entitlements, provide educational support to children, train youth for alternative professions, and advocate policy changes. |
Details:
- The project focuses on the manual scavenging community in Tumkur and Pavgada. Thamate works simultaneously on eradication of manual scavenging, explaining people of the rights that come with their profession, collectivizing them to demand for their rights, and collecting information to file PIL on all discrepancies.
- Thamate also aims to break the cycle of continuing in the same job generation after generation and ensure access to proper education facilities for children of this community.
