State: Manipur NGO: Center for Research and Advocacy in Manipur Summary: There are ~170 dams planned for construction in the Northeast. Each of these dams will have devastating impacts such as inundation of agricultural land, deforestation, mass displacement of people, and impact on food and livelihood sources. Center for Research and Advocacy in Manipur (CRAM) is based out of Imphal, Manipur. CRAM focuses on promoting human rights and sustainable development of indigenous people who are being impacted by construction of mega dams. CRAM works towards promoting participatory decision making in regards to the rights and sustainable development of their land and conservation of natural resources. |
Highlights:
- In the recent years, CRAM has worked with indigenous communities impacted by the Mapithel dam on the Thoubal river, the Khouga, Singda dam and Khoupam dam.
- CRAM takes a multifaceted approach to achieve their objectives which include:
- Community Level Meetings to build awareness regarding protection of land, environment and forest, specifically, promoting involvement of youth, women and community leaders
- Engagement with local authorities and intervene in legal proceedings to ensure appropriate systems are in place for justice with regards to the human rights and development
- Research, document and disseminate information through different channels on the changes affecting the land and natural resources, and impact of the policies on the community
- Community Level Meetings to build awareness regarding protection of land, environment and forest, specifically, promoting involvement of youth, women and community leaders
