AID-Baton Rouge

In the past few days, the population of Baton Rouge has doubled as evacuees from Southern Louisiana and relief organizations have converged on the capital city. Volunteers at AID Baton Rouge are assisting in various relief efforts around the city, especially at shelters on the LSU Baton Rouge campus. AID-Houston

Houston is currently hosting tens of thousands of evacuees and serving as a logistics center for relief organizations. AID Houston volunteers are working at local shelters and have volunteered their homes for students from New Orleans. For more updated information, e-mail houston@aidindia.org

 
 

AID-Atlanta

A number of evacuees are being housed in Atlanta, which opened shelters as soon as evacuation orders were passed in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. AID Minnesota

AID-MN volunteer Dwijendra Nath Guru is part of a local group from the Twin Cities driving down to Mississippi with supplies of fresh produce, water, clothes, diapers etc. The group will distribute materials in a community north of Biloxi, MS and meet with residents and evacuees in the area to assess local requirements. Efforts are under way to set up a soup kitchen with contributions from farms and communities in Minnesota and Wisconsin.

AID Austin

AID Austin chapter is organizing a dinner and a documentary screening on 24th (Saturday) to raise money for Katrina survivors. Proceeds from the event will go to the following two groups :

1. Community Labor United, a coalition of progressive community groups that was active in New Orleans before Katrina struck.
2. Federation of Southern cooperatives. A group that works on land-rights for African-Americans.
