So what this magazine hopes to be like? It has to be a magazine which children can love. A magazine that can be children's friend. It is fun and joy to be with. It is a source or wonder and fantasy. Thus this magazine will have to have all that children love: Stories, poems, cartoons, descriptions, activities, puzzles, jokes....joyful illustrations and pictures. Plus many do-it-yourself things and make- your-own-toys. Plus characters that question and challenge injustices and inequalities, face difficult societal questions and conflicts. Answers to questions and questions to answers. Inspiring stories of extraordinary humans. Writings, expression and creativity by children. A magazine that will build a unique space in children’s lives, so that children’s love for it makes it run, children become first its customers,  and then  slowly evolve into writers, contributors, critics and editors too. The magazine must throw challenges to the child’s intellect and inquisitiveness. Make the child think and question the natural as well as the social world around him/her. The magazine is not going to be a ‘pure science’ publication, but one which touches all aspects of life, with the subliminal messages of a scientific and humanitarian spirit.

Some of the articles are from popular children’s writers from India, while others are adapted and translated from work in other languages. A network of volunteers, of the large People’s Science Movement, distributes copies of the magazines to schools that pass them down to their students. The magazines costs only Rupees 10/- per issue or Rupees 100/- for an annual subscription (120/- for institutions), which is the cost of paper, printing and distribution alone. It is a purely non-profit venture, with all intellectual inputs being honorary. The initial response to the magazine is very heartening. But we have to remember, we cannot be satisfied with thousands alone, our target group is 10 crores of children!

The dream is on, starting October 2004, and you are invited to participate in it. These stated objectives are a tall order, and can be met only when many dedicated Indians participate in this dream, according to their own interests and expertise. Remember, what you give to the magazine is your small contribution to the future of India! [previous page]
