Aruna Roy and Shankar Singh, both of the Mazdoor Kisan Shakti Sangathan based in Rajasthan, visited 11 chapters and gave impassioned talks on the need to return to sanity and basic human values. Aruna Roy, who has investigated the violence in Gujarat as part of the Concerned Citizens’ Tribunal, described how engaging the larger Indian community and rediscovering for ourselves the benevolent essences of various religions rather than being deluded by religion-based ideologies of hatred was essential. These discussions were in addition to extensive descriptions of the MKSS’s fabulous work on the campaign for the Right to Information, which has led to greater accountability of corrupt politicians and civil servants in some villages of Rajasthan. The lecture at Boston was recorded, and anyone interested in procuring a copy just send an email. In many locations, the lecture was accompanied by a screening of the documentary "Hey Ram: Genocide in the Land of Gandhi". This documentary gave a first-hand account of the terrible nature of the communal violence in Gujarat. Though it was a simple collation of narratives, it was an extremely powerful and emotive documentary that few could watch dry-eyed. More about this documentary, as well as how it can be obtained, can be found here. |
