Peace and Communal Harmony Week, March 4-10, 2002

The Association for India’s Development declared a Peace and Communal Harmony Week on March 4-10, 2002. The call for a one-day fast and solidarity with the victims of communal violence in India was answered by hundreds of people across the world.

A TIME TO THINK, A TIME TO ACT

This is a call to everyone who is distressed with the shocking events in Gujarat, to state where we stand. We need to assert that from a basic human standpoint, what has happened in Godhra and across Gujarat in the past few days is
intolerable and inhuman . In the face of such brutality, the only way we can retain our humanity is by clearly and without ambiguity stating our moral stand.

Several groups and individuals are coming together in different locations to hold vigils and rallies for peace and solidarity. Please note the details at the end of the page, and participate wherever you can. Seeking inspiration from Gandhiji who came from the same state, we give a call for a one-day FAST for peace and communal harmony.

- You can participate in the fast from wherever you are, at your home or workplace.

- If you can congregate with others while fasting, you are encouraged to do so, and inform us.

- You can choose one or more days, and fast for 24 hours, or from dawn to dusk, whatever manner you feel is appropriate.

- If you cannot fast, you can still sign on to express solidarity with the fast and its purpose.

Please sign on below, and widely spread the message and encourage all your friends.

Statement for the fast and solidarity

- We sincerely share the anguish of the people who have been affected by the violence.

- We strongly condemn the violent acts and the actions of those who incited them. We see them as the loss of humanity.

- We believe that peace and harmony among its diverse communities should be the basis for India, and the stirring up of passions against such harmony is the biggest disservice to the people, the country and humanity.

- Many of us might belong to a minority community in countries or regions we live in, and we are aware that if society does not promote peace and harmony and prevent violence, few of us can survive.

- We believe that the government is responsible for promoting peace for all its citizens, and the deliberate behavior of the government in failing to protect its citizens, and in encouraging violence, is utterly reprehensible.
