The presentation will be based on my visit to Asha-Lucknow and interaction with Asha-India volunteers in Lucknow, Kanpur and Mumbai. Sandeep Pandey the founder of Asha has initiated an experiment in education based on the philosophy of Jeevan Vidya. This philosophy, which was motivated by the failures of the current education system, emphasizes that education can fulfill its purpose in society only if it can perform the following two tasks:

1. Inculcate values for a just and humane social order.
2. Provide the means for gainful employment

Based on this philosophy various educational programmes have been taken up in villages of Ballia district in UP, in slum colonies around Kanpur, Lucknow and Mumbai. These programmes try to address the needs of young children, youths and also the teachers involved in different ways. These schools give primacy to informal education, skills for the sake of self-employment and self-sufficiency of the school and its constituents. We will discuss the degree to which these attempts have been successful and the future plans of Asha-India which include setting up resource centers (which will be known as Asha Ashrams) for the spread of the Jeevan Vidya philosophy and plans for involving other groups and organizations into a movement for meaningful alternative education.
